Specs:

  • LED: GT-FC40 4000-4500K
  • Battery: 2x 21700 (not included), comes with adapter for flat tops.
  • Driver: Convoy 12v 4amp boost driver
  • UI: Dual switch 4 Modes with strobe shortcut (same as Convoy L6)
  • Reflector Type: OP
  • Thermal Regulation: Questionable (Testing showed step down to 40%, held for 30mins with continued rising temps till shutoff)

First impressions:
A somewhat sleek, yet sturdy build. Feels like a scaled down and slender Convoy L6. Great feel and balance in hand. This being my first GT-FC40 light, I am in love with the quality of light!

Build:
Great Build quality. I have to remind myself that this isn't a L6 which is a benchmark for heavy duty build quality, but fit and finish is great on this light. No complaints at all.

Long Term Usage notes:
My one gripe with this light is how hot it gets in my sustained brightness test. This is the first light I've gotten from Convoy that made me realize that the thermal regulation implementation is "flawed". In my testing, it seems to have working thermal regulation, in that it steps down from Turbo to High once it reaches a certain temp, but once it steps down to High (40%), its like the temp sensor shuts off or the light ignores the temp sensor and doesn't step down any further. It steps down to high around 130f which is fine, but them keeps climbing slowly till it hits 30 mins..................

Battery:
For this light, I use 2 P42A 21700 cells.

Brightness Perf:

  • Low: 44
  • Med: 334
  • High: 1655
  • Turbo: 3327
  • Max Lumens @30s: 3180
  • Max Sustained Lumens: 1550* (too hot and stepped down to low)

Verdict:
For the cost, this is an amazing light in every way. Great build quality, great runtime, great quality of light, useable throw, great brightness. The only thing it isn't good at is thermal throttling itself (which will be less of a problem in actual use while holding it since hands help dissapate heat), and efficiency, the GT-FC40 isn't known for its remarkable efficiency, which is the case with all high CRI lights.

Pros:

  • Great build quality/fit and finish.
  • Very well balanced in the hand
  • Great brightness
  • No tint shift
  • High CRI

Cons:

  • Thermal regulation only steps down to 40% and no further. 40% isn't low enough for adequate heat dissapation in this host.
  • Somitimes I forget the side switch doesn't turn off the light
  • Not very efficient (All high CRI lights aren't that efficient, but it shows more in high lumen lights where heat can be a problem)
