Specs:

  • LED: Nichia 519A 2700K
  • Battery: 2x 14500 or 2 AA (made for button tops, but flat tops can work too with a solder blob).
  • Driver: Convoy buck driver (buck/boost?)
  • UI: 4 Modes
  • Reflector Type: OP
  • Thermal Regulation: Yes

First impressions:
A somewhat sleek, yet sturdy build. I know I said the same thing for the M21G but again, I feel that perfectly describes the T4. The T4 however has a much more pleasant/elegant design language that makes me want to take care of it and not scratch it lol. It totally screams "What a modern Maglite 2AA should be".

Build:
Great Build quality. Everything about this is smooth and well machined. The only thing that seems out of place is the tail switch, it needs a metal one in my opinion.

Long Term Usage notes:
My one gripe with this light is the absurdly short battery life with 2x 14500's. I know i'm using crappy 700mah 14500's, but it was still kind of unexpected lol. I have around 150 useable 14500's so its not a problem for me but it may be a problem for somebody else. I got a max of 21min of battery life in my testing before LVP warning. Also, I had random contact issues using my flat top 14500's in this light. The brass post is a little too flat as one of the black SMD circut things is raised higher than the brass post (see pics). This causes no issues with button tops, but flat tops might hit the black thing. This is very easily fixed by soldering a blob of solder on the brass post which can be done in less than a minute. Doing this also slightly increases the spring tension and should help prevent flickering while jolting the light around too. I haven't encountered any flickering though, even before the mod. This is also my first 519A light and I have to say, the 519A is amazing! Such high CRI and good brightness for such a small LED. Noticably better than a 2700k SST20. This is a great light for when you are trying to find something around the house or outdoors.

Battery:
For this light, I use 2x UR14500AC 740mah flat top cells. Solder blob recommended for flat top use.

Brightness Perf:

  • Low: 7
  • Med: 74
  • High: 225
  • Turbo: 551
  • Max Lumens @30s: 524
  • Max Sustained Lumens: 505

Verdict:
For those that love the 2AA Maglite (had one myself that I loved) This will satisfy that urge to have a modern, quality, bright 2AA form factor light. I wanted a 14500 light since I have 150+ 14500 cells and this is a high performing durable 14500/2xAA light for general use. Throw away your 2AA maglite and get one of these for ~$20!

Pros:

  • Great build quality/fit and finish.
  • Very well balanced in the hand
  • Great brightness for 2AA form factor
  • Arguably one of the Highest CRI LEDs available
  • Great for those that like the 2AA Maglite

Cons:

  • Short runtime
  • Not very efficient (All high CRI lights aren't that efficient, but it shows more in high lumen lights where heat can be a problem)
  • Needs slight mod to work well with flat tops
